Matale's Lakegala Mountain Hike: Everything You Need to Know

Matale is home to Narangamuwa Lakegala Mountain, a well-known trekking destination. The Knuckles mountain range contains Mount Lakegala.  Meemure Lakegala and Narangamuwa Lakegala are the names of its two peaks. Meemure Lakegala is a dangerous hike that requires a high level of hiking experience.

The name Lakegala Mountain, which rises to a height of about 1310 meters, means "The Rock of Lanka." It's said to be one of Sri Lanka's most difficult hikes.

It's said that the unusual triangle shape of Lakegala Mountain resembles the Matterhorn in the Rockies. It is also well-known for being one of the world's tallest exposed rock outcrops, which can only be reached by skilled hikers wearing the proper equipment for mountain climbing. It is one of the best places in Sri Lanka for trekking, despite its difficulty.

Because it is situated in the remote Meemure town, the mountain's surroundings are teeming with flora and fauna and are mostly unaffected by outside influences.
The elevation of the Lakegala Mountain is almost 4,000 feet above sea level.

A Synopsis of Lakegala Mountain's Past

The stories around Lakegala Mountain are many. A mythology that goes like this is the one about King Ravana ruling the kingdom of Sri Lanka from the top of Lakegala mountain. There is also a widely held myth that states that on his third trip to Sri Lanka, Lord Buddha walked up this mountain.
